In 2022 British Sign Language became an official language of the United Kingdom. There are estimated to be around 90,000 Deaf BSL communicators across the country and there are undoubtedly people in your parish who rely on BSL as their means of communication.
How can you include the BSL community in your Christmas services?
This website: https://christianbsl.com/music/
has Christmas songs and carols for use in services.
You could get some interpreters to provide BSL for your carol services and advertise this through any Deaf contacts you can find in the community. Include this on your website and your Christmas invitations.
Services will need two interpreters in order to provide interpretation throughout.
You can find interpreters through:
Signs of God www.signsofgod.org.uk
Has a searchable database of Christian interpreters that are familiar with Church services. They are also happy to send interpreting requests to their members.
Both these organisations have databases that are searchable by regions or postcodes:
The National Register of Communication Professionals with Deaf and Deafblind people www.nrcpd.org.uk
The Association of Sign Language Interpreters www.asli.org.uk
