“Working together to ensure deaf and disabled people are full members of the church”

23rd December

As the dark evenings are with us, make sure you look at your exterior lighting and the lighting around your building, so people who experience sight loss can be safe.

Exterior pathways and entrances should be well lit, and steps should be marked with contrasting and visible nosing’s. If you have handrails on steps these should be of sufficient contrast to be easy for people with some sight loss to see at night.

If people have to operate doorhandles to get in, these should be of sufficient contrast to the door to make them easy to locate. Replace any faulty lamps, those that do not work and those that are flashing or pulsating. Make sure your entrances are well lit, outside and inside. If the lighting in your worship area is poor, see if it is possible to improve it in one area and provide notices to let people know about this. Make sure those who lead and speak are in a place that is well lit to help people follow the service and to aid those who rely on lipreading.
