Jane, a contributor from Leicester Diocese writes:
“Recently, our church has had to complete its quinquennial and part of that was looking at accessibility. Our PCC secretary asked several of us in the church who have lived experience of a wide range of disabilities, both visual and hidden to fill in a form and give our feedback as to our opinions on the building.
This was completed and a report went to our PCC. They are now considering the issues raised and how to address some of them, some were easy to implement, and some will require further thought and funding.
It was great that we were asked to help with this audit and that it wasn’t just filled in by someone who may or may not have a wide experience of access to the building.
Some of us also widened our response from the building to consider other aspect of access around the service and how we can make it more accessible, such things as the language we use when inviting people to join in sung worship, to providing fidget toys and ear defenders for use, to how we welcome people with physical disabilities into our church.
Whilst we may not be able to meet every suggestion immediately due to finances it is good to know our PCC take access seriously and involve those it impacts in discussions.”
